LOCATION
Fužine is a small town situated 730 meters above sea level, in the southwest of the Gorski kotar region. It is surrounded by picturesque mountains, the silence of centennial forests and magnificent lakes. Since the town's foundation to the present, Fužine owes its development to its favorable location in terms of transit lines - once this was due to its proximity to the Carolina road, which used to be the main connection between continental Croatia and northern Adriatic, then the railway, while today its development is further stimulated by the new Zagreb-Rijeka highway that has brought the traveling time from the town to the coast down to a mere half hour. It is truly a pleasure to enjoy hot summer days on the coast and afterwards return to the cool highland air and spend the night in one of many tourist accommodations offered at Fužine.
Fužine was known as a hostelry for travelers since very long ago; later it acquired a reputation as both summer and winter resort, and a popular destination for weekend excursions. Today people from all over Croatia and numerous tourists from abroad come here, mostly to enjoy the preserved nature, pleasant climate, beautiful scenery, the abundant offer of various recreational activities, numerous tourist attractions and excellent gastronomy.
The name Fužina first appeared in the beginning of the 17th century, as the name for one of the Zrinski-Frankopan lands; the term probably comes from the Italian word "fucina" or German "fussine", meaning "furnace" (as in melting-furnace), since there are records of iron being melted in this area. Some decades later, Fužina is mentioned as hostelry for travelers. Although today the official name of the town is Fužine, some older inhabitants still use the old term Fužina. There are no records as to when this change of terms happened.
